Listen to a native sample
Start from a clean German sentence, choosing 0.75x or 1x speed to match your level.
We don't want to turn this page into a long corporate pitch. What matters more is why Berlingo exists: to help you hear German more accurately and speak it with confidence.
Why we started
Most German learners don't lack material — vocabulary lists, grammar guides, videos and apps are everywhere. What's rare is a place that drills the part that actually makes German hard: the ä/ö/ü/ß sounds, consonant clusters like ch/sch/sp/st, and the reflex of speaking at native pace.
Berlingo was built from that observation. Instead of adding another content library, we focused on one clear loop: listen closely, transcribe or identify the right characters, repeat it out loud, and get feedback immediately.
That's why Berlingo focuses on sound, text and feedback, so you can come back and practice every day without it feeling heavy.
What we believe
These principles keep Berlingo focused whenever we add a new exercise or feature.
Accurate pronunciation comes from actually listening, writing and speaking out loud — not from reading phonetic rules.
A few minutes of practice is still worth it if it forces you to focus on the exact sound or word you get wrong.
Use Google to enter practice; progress saves in your browser.
Knowing exactly which word or sound was wrong matters far more than a vague overall score.
How Berlingo practices
This loop repeats across every practice mode, from the alphabet to the citizenship exam.
Start from a clean German sentence, choosing 0.75x or 1x speed to match your level.
Type back what you heard or correctly identify the special characters — the fastest way to surface a real gap.
Shadow the sample sentence to train rhythm and intonation, not just silent reading.
Get word-by-word feedback so you know exactly what to redo before moving on.
We read every message. Tell us what's getting in the way of your practice.
